What Happens When You Call?
When you call 988 or any crisis line, a trained crisis counselor will answer. Here is what to expect:
- You will be connected with a trained, compassionate counselor
- They will listen without judgment and help you talk through what you are experiencing
- Together, you will develop a plan to help you feel safe
- If needed, they can connect you with local resources and follow-up support
- The conversation is confidential
You do not need to be suicidal to call. Crisis lines are available for anyone experiencing emotional distress, overwhelming thoughts, or a difficult situation.
